Liposuction is a versatile, minimally invasive sculpting procedure that surgeons can perform nearly anywhere on the body. As a highly sought-after procedure, one of patients’ most frequently asked questions is: What is the cost? The answer is that it depends on several factors such as technique, amount of fat removed, length of the procedure, and anesthesia.

The Basics of Liposuction
In a 2020 report, the American Society of Cosmetic Surgery labeled liposuction as one of the top 5 most popular procedures in the United States. (1) As a whole, it boasts a low complication rate due to the fact that surgeons make tiny incisions of less than an inch, and sutures are not always required. First, the surgeon administers tumescent fluid, a mixture of lidocaine to numb the area, and epinephrine to constrict blood vessels and prevent bleeding. Then, a thin instrument called a cannula gently sucks out the fat, providing smoother, slimmer contours. With this technique, surgeons can sculpt areas of the abdomen, thighs, hips, flanks, buttocks, upper and lower back, and upper arms.
Technology has improved dramatically over the years, allowing patients to heal faster and attain leaner figures and renewed confidence. In fact, since 2011, over 50 new developments and devices have been used to make liposuction the safest and most efficient it has ever been. (2) One of these advancements is VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) which employs the use of ultrasound, a type of vibrational energy that loosens fat safely from the surrounding tissue. As a former student of an expert VASER liposuction trainer, Dr. Hüseyin Kandulu, Dr. Ahmed has learned from one of the most proficient specialists in the field.
Benefits of VASER Hi-Def Liposuction
VASER liposuction offers a multitude of benefits that can transform both the physical appearance and mental well-being of patients. There are also several surgical benefits that make it a superior choice over standard liposuction. VASER has the following benefits:
- Allows for more precise body sculpting
- Results in a shorter recovery time than standard liposuction. (3)
- Causes significantly less bruising than standard liposuction.
- By strategically leaving behind thin layers of fat, Dr. Ahmed can enhance muscle tone.
- It has the ability to enhance skin tightening, effectively correcting mildly lax skin. (4)
Candidates
Ideal candidates are non-smoking, healthy individuals who are looking to sculpt and tone areas of the body with more fat deposits. Dr. Ahmed will consider patients who are willing to quit smoking and nicotine products for a few weeks. Candidates should be close to their ideal body weight and have realistic expectations of what VASER Hi-Def can accomplish for their body. Suitable patients for VASER liposuction are at or below a BMI of 30.
Personal Consultation
During your consultation, Dr. Ahmed will take the time to understand your unique goals and concerns that can be addressed with liposuction. He will evaluate your medical history and assess your anatomical features to determine whether liposuction is the appropriate procedure for you. This comprehensive evaluation will allow him to develop a personalized treatment plan based on your skin quality and elasticity.

Preparation
In preparation for the procedure, Dr. Ahmed will make sure to conduct a few blood tests to ensure you’re healthy enough to undergo the surgery. He may make changes to your medications and supplements to prevent the risk of complications. This will include requiring you to refrain from taking blood thinners, anti-inflammatories, and certain supplements that can cause unwanted bleeding or bruising.
If you are a current smoker, consume nicotine products, or drink alcohol regularly, you will have to stop for a certain period of time to get your blood circulation and healing processes working at their best. Prior to your appointment, you should speak with a trusted individual who can drive you home afterward. On the day of your appointment, be sure to bring comfortable clothing that will be easy to take on and off during this initial period.
Liposuction Procedure
After you’ve been given local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, Dr. Ahmed will begin by injecting tumescent fluid, a necessary part of all liposuction procedures. Then, he will make several tiny incisions along the treatment area to administer the ultrasound energy. Dr. Ahmed will move the VASER device back and forth within the subcutaneous tissue as it liquefies the fat. He will then employ a gentle suction, targeting the necessary areas until a sufficient amount of tissue has been removed. He will then suture the incisions and place a compression garment over the treatment area.
360 VASER Liposuction
With this type of VASER procedure, Dr. Ahmed will simultaneously target fat deposits in your back, flanks, and the front of your midsection. By slimming down multiple areas, your results will look more balanced and natural. Though it’s a more comprehensive surgery, Dr. Ahmed can complete 360 VASER liposuction in just 1 hour.
Recovery and Results
After your procedure, we will monitor you in a recovery room, but you will get to go home the same day. It is essential that someone takes you home since you will be unable to drive due to the effects of anesthesia. It’s normal to experience some discomfort, bruising, and swelling. Depending on which area of the body you receive liposuction on, you’ll have to wear your compression garment for the next 2 to 6 weeks to help relieve these symptoms.
Dr. Ahmed advises his patients to take very short walks around the house as soon as they feel well enough. This will allow your body to heal faster since there is adequate blood flow through your whole body. Many patients are able to return to work after just 1 week of downtime. You will need a few more weeks of recovery before you get back to your regular workout routine.

FAQ
Does liposuction provide permanent results?
Liposuction can sculpt away stubborn fat permanently so long as you don’t gain weight. Consult a doctor on how you can best maintain your results with a diet and exercise regime that works best for you.
Does liposuction leave scars?
Liposuction does not leave significant scars; the surgeons make incisions that are only a fraction of an inch- just large enough to insert the cannula for fat removal. While patients often have tiny scars after the surgery, they are often strategically hidden in certain creases of the body and fade relatively quickly compared to other types of surgical scars.
Why is liposuction a dangerous procedure for significantly overweight patients?
Liposuction is a safe body sculpting procedure for those with a BMI under 30, but for people who are heavier, the procedure can be dangerous. A BMI over 30 places you at a higher risk of anesthesia complications and issues with wound healing.
Why is a compression garment necessary after a liposuction procedure?
Compression garments serve the purpose of reducing the swelling caused by fluid buildup in the treatment area. Though this is a normal reaction of the immune system, too much can affect the quality of the results and lead to more discomfort during recovery. Compression garments also ensure that your skin heals nicely against the new contours.
