Facelift

A facelift is a cosmetic procedure that tightens and smooths features, resulting in a reinvigorated and rejuvenated facial appearance. Since its inception, the facelift, or rhytidectomy – to use its proper medical term –  has developed from what many would consider to be a relatively unrefined skin procedure to a precise series of incisions to rejuvenate the face.

Despite the rise in popularity of nonsurgical facial aging treatments such as injectable cosmetics, facelift procedures are still very common. (1) Patients seeking a more permanent solution may also want to adjust and refine more than just one or two areas of their complexion. With modern rhytidectomy surgery, this can be a realistic goal that is effectively achieved. Gone are the overstretched, “surprised” looks typically associated with facelift procedures in the past. Using modern techniques, surgeons can reposition the underlying muscle and/or fascial layers in the neck and face, allowing the skin to be re-draped in a smooth but tension-free fashion. (2)

Modern Facelifts

The modern facelift is a refined, precise procedure, but it wasn’t always this way. In 1910, German surgeons described the first facelift in medical literature.(3) Advances in surgical techniques during the 20th century initially motivated surgeons toward repositioning the deeper muscles of the face, however more modern facelift techniques utilize minimally invasive tools to get the job done.(4)  There is currently no general consensus about the “best” technique regarding facelift surgery, which means that an individualized plan according to exact specifications can be created for you. There are now multiple facial rejuvenation options available that benefit patients greatly in the hands of an experienced surgeon.(5) You can find further information about facelifts and other cosmetic surgery procedures offered by Dr. Ahmed in his blog.

Benefits

Collagen is an important protein in the body that promotes skin elasticity. Unfortunately, as we age, collagen production in our skin diminishes, which causes sagging. The physical inevitabilities of aging cause the elasticity and tightness of our skin to decline over time, causing furrows, drooping, fine lines, and wrinkles. There are several ways a facelift procedure can help to minimize the signs of aging, including:

  • Reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Tightening loose skin in the face
  • Reducing fatty jowls
  • Eliminated double chin
  •  Creating a more youthful facial appearance

With meticulous aftercare, a rhytidectomy procedure can revitalise your face with manageable downtime, allowing you to complete normal daily tasks within days of your surgery. For patients in Las Vegas, a high quality facelift procedure is within reach at Las Vegas Body Sculpting. Our cosmetic surgery offices are conveniently located a short distance from the Strip, near Interstate 515.

Preparation for a Facelift Procedure

To prepare for your rhytidectomy, you must take certain important precautions in the days and weeks before surgery. Before your facelift procedure, you should:

  • Stop taking some common anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs such as ibuprofen)
  • Keep your skin hydrated before and after your procedure (drink lots of water)
  • Stop smoking six weeks before your procedure
  • Ensure you don;t eat past your doctor-designated cut-off period prior to surgery
  • Arrange for a ride to and from our offices
  • Prepare your home recovery environment for comfort and accessibility

It is vital for every patient undergoing a facelift procedure to carefully follow the guidance set forth by Dr. Ahmed, both before and after surgery, so that you can make the most of your facial rejuvenation experience.

Facelift Procedure

After Dr. Ahmed administers anesthesia, your rhytidectomy surgery is performed in stages. These stages, which involve incisions in certain key areas of the face, will give Dr. Ahmed the ability to reshape and restore your face according to your individualized rejuvenation plan, which may involve one of a number of different types of facelift technique:

Traditional Facelift

In a traditional facelift, Dr. Ahmed makes a primary incision that runs from the temples along the hairline to below the earlobes. Alternately, to reduce the appearance of jowls, this incision can also trace a path along the jawline. Muscle is repositioned and facial tissues are reshaped, after which excess skin is redraped over the newly positioned musculature and facial tissue.

Mini Facelift

A Mini facelift is shorter in duration than a traditional facelift, but still produces great aesthetic results. This procedure is suitable for younger patients with minor facial skin sagging. Wrinkles, and sagging are addressed in the lower face only, resulting in a reduced recovery period after your surgery.

Extended Facelift

With extended rhytidectomy, surgical incisions target the neck as well as the lower face. Extended facelifts require a longer initial incision from the temples, behind the ear. During your procedure, your surgeon will carefully reconfigure facial muscle and remove and reshape skin in the jaw and upper neck for brighter, rejuvenated results.

Recovery & Results of a Facelift Procedure

It can take between 1-2 weeks to recover from a facelift procedure. You should expect some temporary bruising and moderate discomfort during the healing process, but it is essential you understand that this tenderness will not last forever. After your surgery is complete, Dr. Ahmed will wrap your head with an elastic compression garment, securing your newly restored features and promoting fast facial healing. Your safe, speedy recovery is  Dr. Ahmed’s number one goal. In your recovery period, he will advise that you keep your compression bandage on for the first few days after your procedure. In addition, he advises all facelift patients to:

  • Elevate the head to reduce postoperative swelling
  • Wear the compression garment(s) until directed otherwise
  • Take prescribed painkillers suitable for post-rhytidectomy discomfort
  • Gently maintain physical activity to encourage blood flow to the face and neck

The lasting results of your facial revitalization will be apparent when the temporary swelling subsides. Dr. Ahmed’s staff will schedule follow-up appointments with him to ensure you are healing well and are happy with the outcome of your surgery.

Surgical Alternatives to a Facelift Procedure

If you feel that you are not quite ready for a facelift, there are other surgical options that may benefit you! Some patients don’t want an all-over makeover for their face, but instead want to focus on particular features that are causing problems. Two of the most common surgery requests Dr. Ahmed receives from patients are for blepharoplasty (eyelid lift surgery) and forehead rejuvenation (brow lift surgery):

Blepharoplasty

An eyelid lift procedure helps to correct drooping of the eyelids (ptosis), and the dark, concave appearance of sunken eyes. It is suitable for patients who solely want to focus on reducing the signs of aging in the eye area.

Brow Lift Surgery

Forehead rejuvenation improves the appearance of the forehead, brow and eye area. Patients who want to target noticeable furrows and wrinkles in the forehead such as glabellar lines may benefit greatly from a brow lift procedure.

Cost

The cost of your facelift procedure depends on your individual circumstances, what type of anesthesia is included in the price of your treatment (local or general), and how much anaesthesia is used. Prices may differ for patients with certain skin types that have been damaged more extensively by UV rays, and patients whose skin is less pliable than average. For further information about the cost of a rhytidectomy with Dr. Ahmed, please fill out this form on our website and one of our knowledgeable staff will contact you as soon as possible regarding your query.
