About Fat Transfer Procedures
Fat transfer procedures, as the name suggests, intend to take body fat from one area of a person’s frame and redistribute it to another area to create a more desired body tone or aesthetic. This is a cosmetic procedure usually performed under general anesthesia. The process involves several steps, starting with making an incision from a donor area which is located on the part or parts of a patient’s body which they wish to reduce fat from. From there, the fat is suctioned out using liposuction techniques, where it is then processed and subsequently reinjected into another area of the body which the patient wishes to increase volume. (1) Common treatment areas include the face, breast, buttocks, and hips.
Benefits
Fat transfer procedures provide numerous benefits, with the procedure itself considered to be safe, time efficient, and directly linked with satisfactory results among patients. (2) Fat transfer procedures effectively combine elements of a liposuction surgery while also providing a natural alternative to other volume-enhancing procedures that might use certain types of fillers to which patients could potentially develop an adverse reaction. Because of this, some might view this type of procedure as accomplishing two goals at once. Additionally, because this surgery utilizes a patient’s body fat, there is a reduced risk of infection when compared to other volume-boosting procedures that use fillers which some patients might be allergic to.
The benefits extend beyond the procedure itself, as many patients report several physical and mental benefits from fat transfers. These benefits can include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Improvements in body composition
- Enhanced body image
- More youthful appearance
Fat transfer procedures can help get you closer to your ideal body aesthetic, and doing so opens the door for improvements in confidence and overall well-being.
Ideal Candidates
Many factors play into whether or not someone is an ideal candidate for fat transfer procedures. The majority of candidates are females seeking to improve their body proportions, although this surgery can appeal to all different types of people with differing goals. To be eligible for a fat transfer procedure, you must have enough body fat around donor areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or arms to effectively perform the transfer. With this established, patients will still need to be in overall good health and ideally are nonsmoking individuals or are willing to forgo the usage of nicotine or alcohol leading up to the procedure.
Whether or not you are an ideal candidate for a fat transfer procedure or perhaps another procedure offered by the Las Vegas Body Sculpting and Aesthetics team is ultimately up to the discretion of Dr. Ahmed and his team. Your eligibility will be determined by a variety of factors and can be established at your consultation. Preparation
Fat transfer procedures often require patients to take a series of necessary steps to prepare for the procedure to ensure the success of the operation. Dr. Ahmed will outline any of these preoperatory steps as part of your overall personalized treatment plan. Patients should make arrangements for travel following the procedure, and in some cases, it will be advised that they make sure to have someone to care for them during the first handful of days during the recovery process.
If you use nicotine or alcohol, you will likely be asked to forgo both of these as soon as possible before the procedure. It is also generally recommended that patients refrain from taking blood thinners or NSAIDs in the days leading up to treatment. Furthermore, if he feels it is necessary, Dr. Ahmed might ask you to discontinue the use of certain medications if he feels they could interfere with the success of your treatment.
Procedure
Every procedure will look somewhat different depending on the person and exactly what type of procedure or perhaps procedures are being performed. In general, before the procedure, Dr. Ahmed will take the required precautions to ensure patient comfort, which will likely involve administering some form of anesthesia. Usage of a local anesthetic is often enough to eliminate any painful sensations during low-volume fat transfer procedures, while general anesthesia is usually utilized during procedures that transfer significant volumes of fat.
Once it is established that you are comfortable, the procedure begins by making an incision around a donor area where you wish to remove excess fat. Liposuction is then used to remove targeted fat cells, which are then purified to remove any excess fluid, dead skin cells, or miscellaneous debris. Following the purification process, the fat cells are then reinjected into the area where you wish to see enhancements in volume. From start to finish, the average fat transfer procedure takes 125 minutes but can last much longer or shorter depending on the patient and details of the procedure. (2)
Recovery
The recovery process will vary greatly depending on the individual and how extensive their procedure is. One thing is certain, however, and it is that Dr. Ahmed will guide you through the process and provide detailed instructions on any postoperative actions you might need to take. Patients are advised to keep the areas of incision clean during the following weeks to minimize the risk of infection and help with the healing process. Most patients should be able to return to day-to-day activities within a week but should avoid strenuous physical activity until otherwise instructed by Dr. Ahmed. Some patients might be forced to wear bandages or special compression garments.
Results
Some results might be noticed almost immediately following the procedure, although the full array of benefits will likely become more and more apparent in the weeks following as the patient begins to fully heal. It is important to note that results are never guaranteed and it is the patient’s responsibility to have realistic expectations as well as maintain a healthy lifestyle to minimize the risk of undoing any positive results they experience.
